Tribute to Derek Shakespeare
Derek Shakespeare, faithful child of God and beloved brother of the Muskoka Deanery, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday February 5th. A graduate of Thorneloe University, Derek was as a Diocesan Lay Reader for 20 years. He served as a guest Officiant at parishes throughout Muskoka, particularly in the multi-point and seasonal churches. An accomplished musician and chorister, it was common to see him arrive as guest Officiant with his alb in one hand and saxophone in the other. His ministry expanded beyond the churches into the hospitals, nursing homes and local prisons. He was part of the team that established Muskoka Deanery’s ministry to developmentally disabled adults, with whom his music and enthusiasm made him a favourite. He will be missed by all who ministered with him over the years, particularly his home churches of St. James Gravenhurst and Holy Manger Barkway.
Derek’s parish sends thanks to the congregations of Muskoka for your love and welcome to Derek over the years.
We ask for prayers for his beloved wife Betty and their family.
A celebration of his life will take place at St. James in Gravenhurst on Saturday, May 3rd at 11am.
