It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marilyn Schmidt, who died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, December 6th, following a time of illness.

A devout follower of Jesus Christ, Marilyn freely and generously shared her God-given gifts. She faithfully served Algoma as the Diocesan ACW President for a number of years and terms, and in that capacity was an active a member of the Diocesan Executive Committee.

One of the ministries that gave Marilyn much pleasure was her service as the diocesan chair of the Bishophurst Maintenance Committee- a position she held for decades. It was Marilyn who helped new bishops feel ‘at home’ in their new home. Any decorating changes a new bishop wanted to make, Marilyn helped facilitate them.

When it was her parish’s turn or the ACW’s turn to host the New Year’s Day levy, a Synod reception or a community Open House, Marilyn’s organizational skills shone through.

In an email to me Bishop Andrews wrote;

‘Marilyn understood that the episcopal order of the church was core to its identity and mission. Consequently, she frequently came to the aid of the occupants of Bishophurst.’

Like Martha in the Bible, Marilyn dedicated herself to ensuring the smooth functioning of church activities, often working tirelessly behind the scenes.

Her hands were always busy, organizing events, preparing meals, or cleaning spaces, all with a heart focused on serving others.

While her work was practical and visible, her commitment stemmed from a deep love for God and God’s people.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to Marilyn’s family as they mourn her loss. May they find comfort in the assurance of God’s eternal promises.

A funeral service will be held at St. Luke’s Cathedral on Wednesday, December 11th, at 1:30 pm with Archbishop Anne presiding.
