Congratulations to the Very Rev. Jay Koyle on his Installation as the Dean of Algoma and Incumbent of St. Luke’s Cathedral.
On Thursday 13th June, 2024 our new Dean was installed at St. Luke’s Cathedral in a glorious service of Holy Eucharist. There was much support from many Algomites, some of whom drove many hours to attend this celebration. Thank you! Your presence made the evening even more special.
We were pleased to welcome Archbishop Fred Hiltz as the preacher – and he was delighted to be back in Algoma again. Archbishop Fred preached a fine sermon drawing on images of LIGHT from the baptismal liturgy. He noted that all the baptized are given a lighted candle, ‘to show that you have passed from darkness to light’. At that point the congregation says, “Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
And then, Archbishop Fred said, many people whisper to the newly baptized, “You can blow out the candle now!” Instead he suggested we give a much larger candle to the newly baptized and let it shine next to the paschal candle throughout the service. Archbishop Fred presented Dean Jay with a beautiful pillar candle where it remained lit until the very end of the service.
It was a poignant moment in a beautiful service.
