4. Fair Trade Coffee will be available for sale at Synod. The price is $12 per bag for a light, breakfast Nicaraguan blend, and $10 per bag if five or more bags are purchased. Please pre-order to ensure availability by contacting northmuskokaparish@yahoo.ca or by calling the Rev. Gail Marie Henderson at 705-789-7544. The primary purpose of the Fair Trade Coffee initiative is to raise awareness.

    1. Upcoming dates to remember:

Diocesan Synod will be held from Wednesday, October 17 to Saturday, October 20. Synod will begin with an opening service at St. Lukes Cathedral on Wednesday evening, and will conclude at noon on Saturday.

The Annual Lay Readers Conference will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday, October 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This session has been designed to fit in with the Synod, and will end in time to have dinner and robe for the service that evening.

    2. There has been some confusion about Diocesan Policy regarding reporting of property matters. The Executive Committee of November 2001 passed the following motion: "That Property Matters Request Forms must be submitted to the Synod Office; and that items which can be approved by the Deanery Officials need not be presented to the Executive Committee. Projects involving expenditures of $25,000 or over, structural changes or diocesan assistance must be brought to the Executive Committee."

Please note that a reporting process to Deanery Officials is required, even for items under $25,000 and even if funds are on hand. Further, if a project involves structural change or a request for a Diocesan grant, it must come before Executive, regardless of the cost.

    3. As part of their mission to provide pastoral and sacramental ministry to those living in isolated communities in Canada's north, the Council of the North has developed educational materials for use in local parishes. The first of these materials is a place mat. It has a map of Canada on the front, with an outline of the geography of the Council of the North. The reverse provides more information and some games to play that share in a fun way facts and concerns of the Council. The place mat could be used in parish or other gatherings to educate all ages on the mission and ministry of the Council of the North. For information on ordering placemats, please contact Fiona Brownlee at fbrownlee@gokenora.com .

    January 30, 2007

For further information and hard copies of the specifications, contact Christine or Harry at the Synod Office.

The Bishop also hopes to visit other locations throughout the diocese to learn about their growing churches, and to gather ideas. In a recent Algoma Anglican article, Bishop Ron stated that he and Jan were looking forward to the chance to visit the most distant members of their family and to study and learn in a new setting.

Anne was able to visit the Centre outside Johannesburg where the Grannies meet together, on Tuesdays for reading, writing and sewing lessons, and on Fridays for prayer meetings and Bible Study. Please watch for an article about her visit in the next Algoma Anglican.

The Grannies decided to spend the bulk of the monetary donations on two new sewing machines which will enhance their curtain/cushion making industry that is bringing in a small amount of income for them. In addition to the money for the Grannies, Anne presented an additional $2,000 to Bishop Brian Germond for other AIDS related projects in his Diocese..

Friday, December 1 is World Aids Day. Please pray for the millions of people whose lives are affected by this pandemic.

Loving God, you show yourself to those who are vulnerable and
    make your home with the poor and the weak in this world;
Warm our hearts with the fire of your Spirit. Help us to accept the challenge of AIDS.
Protect the healthy, we pray, calm the frightened, give courage to those in pain,
Comfort the dying, and give to the dead eternal life.
Console the bereaved, we beg you, and strengthen those who care for the sick.
May we, your people, using all our energy and imagination, and trusting in your steadfast love,
be united with one another in conquering all disease and fear. Amen.
