News Flash for Algoma

Our Vision

We are joyful Anglicans, serving, growing, and proclaiming Christ’s love in Algoma and beyond.

The new Diocesan Strategic Plan 2009-2014, Live the Vision and Proclaim the Joy, was approved by the Executive Committee at their March meeting.  The Strategic Plan is a 5 year plan that identifies where Algoma wants to be, and how it is going to get there.  The results oriented Plan includes 7 Strategic Objectives, and 32 specific strategies.

The entire Strategic Plan will soon be available on the Diocesan website (www.dioceseofalgoma.com).

In accordance with one of the recommendations in the Strategic Plan, a Management Consulting firm has been hired to make recommendations to the Bishop-Elect and the Executive Committee relating to the optimal organizational structure to achieve the seven strategic objectives of the plan.  Following a request for proposals from several consulting firms and a careful evaluation process, Wellington Partners has been selected.  Mr. Dan Brooks of Wellington will be the project manager, and he will present the final report at the June 2009 Executive Committee meeting.

A Strategic Plan Implementation Committee will be appointed by the Bishop-Elect and the Executive Committee.  The terms of reference are being developed for this committee, which will ensure the timely implementation of the objectives, and follow-up evaluation.

The status of the Strategic Plan will be presented at Synod 2009, and at each subsequent Synod.

May the grace of God bless us all as we journey together to grow and build Algoma.

The following message was just received from Ramesh Ferris.

On behalf of the entire Cycle to Walk team I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone in the Diocese of Algoma for showing so much support for the Cycle to Walk Polio Campaign. I have now been in my hometown of Whitehorse, Yukon for the past 2 weeks resting up after the 7110kms hand-cycling journey. The campaign traveled through our beautiful country for 173 days and brought in $300,000 for polio eradication, education, and rehabilitation. I will forever have fond memories of support and friendships in the Diocese of Algoma during my life as a teenager, young adult, and now as part of the Cycle to Walk polio campaign. Many blessings to all of you as you start your new chapter of your diocesan life. Once again thanks for sharing in the belief of a polio free world and supporting the Cycle to Walk polio campaign.

Take Care, Ramesh Ferris

Dear Members of the Electoral Synod of Algoma and Diocesan Friends,

Bishop Elect AndrewsTo those of you who were at the Synod last week I want to say how touched Fawna, Ellen, Clare and I were by the outpouring of gladness that greeted us at the conclusion of the election, and I want to thank the many others in the diocese who have expressed gracious words and best wishes.  With all of the accolades I have been receiving it is probably a good thing not to be fitted for a mitre for a few months yet – it will take some time for my head to shrink back to size!

This was my first episcopal electoral synod and I found it an overwhelming experience.  The day was handled with great dignity by Archbishop Caleb Lawrence, and synod members worked hard and prayerfully through nearly nine hours of voting taking nine ballots.  There was clearly some political division indicated by the voting, but this was insignificant compared to the impressive loyalty of the delegates who were reluctant to shift their votes from their preferred candidates until it was evident that momentum was gathering elsewhere.  In the end the support came on like a wave – a wave which I trust was the work of the Spirit.

Many of you know how conflicted I was about letting my name go forward for this office.  At the eleventh hour, when the perks and joy of my present position were particularly fulsome and I needed perspective and godly advice, a number of friends listened patiently to me and then reminded me what a precious gift the Church is and how the timing of our lives is in God’s hand.  If I have any confidence that my ministry can have some impact for good in God’s kingdom it is based on the knowledge of God’s grace, the sincerity of the support I received at synod, and your prayers.

The particulars of the consecration have yet to be worked out but in the meantime I am grateful that the affairs of the diocese will be managed by a team consisting of the Dean, the Territorial Archdeacons and Archdeacon Harry Huskins as Diocesan Administrator.  Together they bring a variety of gifts and knowledge that I know I shall come greatly to rely on and I look forward to communicating regularly with them in the months to come.

Finally, let me express my deep appreciation for the leadership of Hugh Mackenzie and the Episcopal Election Process Committee, and for the able facilitation of the event by Archbishop Lawrence, the Synod Office Staff and the Cathedral Staff and Clergy.  I am also certain that I speak for the whole diocese when I say that the willingness of the other eight candidates to make themselves vulnerable to God’s call in this personally tumultuous way elicits our profound admiration and respect.  Most of all, I give thanks to God for the privilege of serving this fine diocese and for the promise that ‘he who began a good work among us will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ’ (Philippians 1.6).

 Grace and peace,

 Stephen

Dr. Andrews and Archbishop Caleb Lawrence will be discussing the date of a Consecration, and this has not been set as yet.  Dr. Andrews will take office as our diocesan bishop at his Consecration.  In the meantime this authority in the diocese in temporal matters such as appointment of clergy to parishes and matters of finance and general administration rests with the Diocesan Administrator.  The Executive Committee, at its June meeting, elected Executive Archdeacon Harry Huskins as Administrator to work with a Standing Committee consisting of the Dean and territorial Archdeacons to deal with these matters.

The spiritual authority in the diocese, in regard to matters such as confirmations and ordinations, rest with Archbishop Lawrence.  If such Services are needed Archbishop Lawrence will arrange for this at the request of the Administrator.  Such confirmations or ordinations are usually conducted by a retired bishop from another diocese at the request of the Archbishop.

The following Collect will be used in Worship Services in the diocese following the Collect of the Day on Sunday, October 12, and Sunday, October 17:

               Almighty God,
We thank you for the working of your Holy Spirit
in the election of the Reverend Dr. Stephen Andrews as our bishop.
Give to him all of the fullness of your grace
so that he may truly be your shepherd among us,
so that he may lead and unite us in our mission and ministries in all of your power,
and so that, on our last day, we may be worthy of the trust you have given us.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

Harry Huskins, Administrator

THE  EPISCOPAL ELECTION PROCESS COMMITTEE
Information Bulletin #2

The E.E.P.C. has been meeting on a regular basis to prepare for the election of the 10th Bishop of Algoma which will take place this Fall.  We are writing to keep you up to date on the election process and to ask for your continued prayers and support.

The E.E. P. C. is currently preparing an Episcopal Electoral Briefing Document which will contain the Diocesan Profile, a Vision for Algoma, Requirements for the nomination of candidates for Bishop and the Electoral process.  This document will be in the hands of Synod delegates and Parishes  in early August.

Nominations for the office of Bishop of Algoma will be accepted by the E.E.P.C.  from August 15th until September 6th, 2008.  Any delegate to the Electoral Synod may nominate a candidate who has agreed to stand.

While specific requirements for nomination as a candidate will be outlined in the Briefing Document, in general, they include the following:

A Nominee must be at least 30 years of age
• A Nominee must be an ordained Priest within the Anglican Communion
• A Nominee must have been an ordained Priest for at least 7 years.
• A nominee must respond to the information requested by the E.E.P.C.  as outlined in detail, in the Briefing Document.

The Nomination process is intended to be guided in its entirety, by the Holy Spirit. Nominees or potential nominees, their nominators and supporters are urged to conduct themselves in a prayerful and contemplative manner and to refrain from any activities that could be construed as campaigning.

As we ask the Holy Spirit for guidance in choosing our new Bishop, it might be helpful to consider the “Call” which will be part of the Briefing Document prepared by the E.E.P.C.

Our call is for a person of prayer, faith and discernment, who will accept the challenge of Algoma’s Vision. Our bishop must be a person who understands and is committed to Mutual Ministry; one who is a decisive leader of our Diocese, with an ability to delegate responsibility and to be our link to the national and international communities; one who is an active defender of the faith; one who is willing to explore and encourage creative shapes of ministry. Our Bishop must be prepared to travel extensively. We are calling this person to the very difficult task of being both an effective leader and compassionate pastor.

In our last Bulletin we invited individuals to suggest questions that might be asked of candidates for Bishop. We have received some of these. Others wishing to participate should have their questions to the Diocesan office no later than July 15th.

We ask for your continued prayers.

June 18, 2008

1. The Bishop will ordain Joan Locke to the Diaconate on Saturday, June 21, at 7 p.m., at Christ Church, Englehart. The liturgical colour will be red and clergy and lay readers are invited to robe and process. Bishop Ferris will be the preacher. Joan graduated from Wycliffe College on June 2, receiving her Master of Divinity degree. She also holds a B.A. in Geography from Laurentian University. Joan is presently serving as Pastoral Assistant in the Parish of Northern Lights. Our prayers are with Joan as she prepares for her ordination.

2. The Rev. Alan Knight has accepted an appointment from Bishop Bruce Howe to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Chatham, as of September 1. Alan was incumbent at Almaguin Parish from 1992 until June 2007. For the past year he has served as incumbent of St. John’s Church, Sault Ste. Marie, and St. John’s Church, Garden River. He has also been Diocesan Ecumenical Officer, and formerly was Regional Dean of Muskoka Deanery. Our best wishes go to Alan as he prepares for this move and new ministry.

Dr. Carol Knox, a parishioner at St. Paul’s Church, Thunder Bay, and Mrs. Verlie Toman, President of the Diocesan ACW, are the official links from Algoma for the International Anglican Women’s Network, Canada. The Canadian group is presently preparing for the Lambeth Conference. Dr. Knox will be leading a series of meditations at Lambeth on the theme of "Women in the Bible Who Took Journeys". The Rev. Joan Cavanaugh-Clark will represent the IAWN-Canada in the Marketplace at the Lambeth Conference. Joan is requesting that women across the Diocese contact her with stories of their personal journeys/triumphs/vocations which could be shared at Lambeth. 5. A big thank you goes out to the congregation of St. John’s Church, Ravenscliffe, who have made a donation of $2,000 to be applied to the Diocesan New Initiatives Fund. This is a thank offering on the occasion of Canon George Sutherland’s 59th year of ordained ministry. This offering was made possible through the outstanding success of the musical "Annie", recently staged by the parish. St. John’s hopes this gift will result in encouragement to other small churches, who can be helped by the New Initiatives Fund, as St. John’s has been in the past.

DIOCESE OF ALGOMA: THE  EPISCOPAL ELECTION PROCESS COMMITTEE

Information Bulletin # 1

TO THE PEOPLE AND CLERGY OF ALGOMA:

Greetings in the name of the Lord!

On Thursday, June 5th, The Executive Committee of the Diocese of Algoma, elected an Episcopal Election Process Committee to facilitate the election of a Bishop, made necessary by the pending retirement of Bishop Ronald Ferris.

The Episcopal Election Process Committee consists of; Eva Black, The Ven. Tom Corston, Steve Kitzul, The Rev. Deborah Kraft, Hugh Mackenzie and The Ven. Munroe Scott. We ask for your prayers as we undertake this important task.

An Electoral Synod for the election of the 10th Bishop of Algoma will take place at St. Luke’s Cathedral in Sault St. Marie beginning on Wednesday, October 1st, 2008. Registration will begin at 4:00 PM on that date. There will be Evensong and working sessions that evening and the election process will begin, following Eucharist, on Thursday, October 2nd.  If a Bishop is not elected on that day, the process will continue during the morning of Friday, October 3rd.  A more detailed Agenda will follow at a later date.

All Clergy are requested to confirm the names of Synod Delegates with Donna Bos at the Synod Office as soon as possible and no later than June 30th, 2008. It is recognized that some changes may have taken place since Synod Delegates were elected in 2007, which makes confirmation necessary.

September and October are busy months in Sault Ste. Marie and therefore accommodation is limited. Munroe Scott has already advised Clergy of hotel rooms that have been blocked for Electoral Synod delegates. However, we underline the urgency for those attending the Electoral Synod, to book their accommodation as soon as possible.

Nominations for the office of Bishop in the Diocese of Algoma will be accepted by the Episcopal Election Process Committee AFTER August 15th, 2008.  Details related to the nomination process will follow in a later bulletin.

It is the intention of The Episcopal Election Process Committee, to communicate as effectively as possible, with Deaneries and Parishes throughout the electoral process. Bulletins will be issued on a regular basis. We ask all members of the Clergy to make these bulletins easily accessible to all members of their parish.

The Committee is currently drafting a Diocesan Profile as part of the material required for the electoral process and Deaneries will be consulted in relation to its content. In addition, Parishes will be asked to submit questions that they might like to ask candidates who are nominated for the office of Bishop.  These submissions will form the basis of questions, drawn at random, and asked of candidates for Bishop during a plenary session at the Electoral Synod.

The election of a Bishop is an important part of our Anglican tradition. He or she is the Chief Shepherd of our Diocese and an important leader in our spiritual life. The electoral process is a quiet and contemplative one, where we collectively seek the will of the Holy Spirit to guide us in choosing a wise and pastoral Bishop of His own choosing.  We therefore seek your prayers between now and the time a Bishop is elected in October.  We offer the following prayer that might be used regularly throughout the Diocese during the Episcopal Election process.

Gracious Lord, Heavenly Father, in all ages, You have raised up faithful servants to  shepherd and guide Your holy people and to make known Your Will among us. Increase in us the gifts of discernment and understanding at this time, that we might know and do, Your Will, as we prepare to elect a bishop for our church family in this Diocese of Algoma. Open our minds, our hearts and our eyes, that we might see, as You see, and choose, as You choose, a shepherd of faith and godliness. Open our ears and guide our tongues that in all our conversations, our listening and speaking, we might be filled with Your Grace and Favour. Bring forth a shepherd centered in Christ, who can build up Your Church and unite Your faithful people.

Almighty God, You are our guide and our good shepherd. In You we place our hope and our trust. Hear the prayers of Your faithful people and lead us in these days until You bring us to one mind and one heart in You and You show us that shepherd and bishop of Your Own choosing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN

On behalf of the Episcopal Election Process Committee,

Tom Corston
Hugh Mackenzie
Co- Chairs.

Executive Committee meets

Election Process begins

The diocesan Executive Committee met in Sudbury June 3-5.  This was the last Executive meeting that Bishop Ferris will chair and he was thanked and honoured for over a decade of service to the diocese as our bishop.

The Executive also made a number of decisions required as part of the process for electing a new bishop.  In accordance with the Canon, the Executive elected the three lay and three clerical members of the Episcopal Election Process Committee.   They are (lay) Hugh Mackenzie, Eva Black, Steve Kitzul (clergy) Tom Corston, Munroe Scott, and Deborah Kraft.  Corston and Mackenzie are the co-chairs of the Committee. The Canon requires the Process Committee to “formulate the process for the election, subject to the approval of the Executive Committee, and oversee the implementation of the same.”

Archbishop Caleb Lawrence has set Thursday, October 2, at the Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie for the election.  Registration will take place the previous evening.  The Process Committee will be announcing further details.

The Executive Committee elected Executive Archdeacon Harry Huskins as diocesan administrator.  The administrator will mange the temporal affairs of the diocese such as finance, property, appointments, and discipline during the period from Bishop Ferris’ retirement until a new diocesan bishop is consecrated and placed in office.

TO:      The Clergy and People of the Diocese of Algoma

For some time now Jan and I have been planning retirement.  Our hope is to move nearer to our large family in Western Canada.

As a result, I have notified the Metropolitan that I will retire as Bishop of Algoma, effective September 30, 2008.

Thank you, Algoma, for what has been a most joyful and productive era in our lives.  We will miss you dearly.  You have been wonderful friends and co-workers in Christ’s mission.

I give thanks to God that he has given me the health, energy, and enthusiasm to lead Algoma over these past thirteen years.  Combined with the fourteen years I spent as Bishop of Yukon, I have now been continuously travelling for twenty-seven years!

The Executive Committee will be meeting this coming week in Sudbury.  They will elect an Episcopal Election Process Committee comprised of three clergy and three laity.  In conjunction with the Metropolitan, that Committee will plan an Electoral Synod for late fall.  They will also elect a Diocesan Administrator to carry out administrative duties between Bishops.

Jan and I will hold you in our prayers as you choose a new Bishop to take you into the next chapter of the life of this Diocese.  No doubt there will be appropriate occasions for us to say farewell to one another in September.

Jan and I leave feeling loved and supported, and we take with us a wealth of joyous memories.  We are deeply appreciative of the prayers, encouragement, and friendship we have encountered in every corner of Algoma over so many years.

I thank God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy...because of your sharing in the Gospel from the first day until now!  ( Philippians 1:3-5)

Blessings,
Ronald: Algoma

We congratulate Munroe and give thanks for his ministry as he prepares for this new level of responsibility.

    2. Archdeacon Hugh Hamilton, who has been serving as Territorial Archdeacon for Algoma Deanery, will be named Archdeacon Emeritus in the Service of Collation being planned for June. Hugh has held the position of Territorial Archdeacon for Algoma for the past ten years. We are grateful to Hugh for his many years of service in this position.

    3. Parishes are asked to hold archival materials until further notice. The facility at Laurentian University is unable to accept additional deposits from us at this time, and we do not have adequate storage capability for parish records at the Synod Office. We are hoping to have the difficulties resolved after a meeting with the Archives in May.

    4. Deacon Lee Sax has quilted a beautiful set of altar hangings as well as Stations of the Cross that she would like to donate to a church that would value them. The altar hangings are in green, blue, and purple seasonal colours. The colours are vibrant and the motifs are clear. The size might be better for a small church. The sets have a burse, a veil, a bible marker, lectern hanging, as well as priests and deacons stoles. Lee previously served as Deacon in Marathon and now lives in California. Her e-mail address is donleesax@earthlink.net .

    5. Please adjust the Diocesan Prayer Cycle for Sunday, April 8th, Easter Day, to reflect the fact that the Rev. Tom Carman has moved from St. Brices, North Bay.

    6. Future meetings of the Matrimonial Commission are scheduled for April 12, May 3, and June 7. Please note that there will be only one meeting held over the summer months, usually scheduled in late July.

    7. The Parish of Malbay, Quebec (part of the Greater Parish of Gaspe), invites clergy, lay readers, and lay professionals of all denominations/faiths to accept their gift of hospitality to the leadership of the Church. The parish has a 100+ year old rectory that sits on a promontory overlooking Malbay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The house is freshly painted and comfortably furnished "and just waiting for tired and frazzled church people to come and enjoy..."

The parish suggest a donation of $600 CDN per week and all donations go to the upkeep of the house. Further information can be obtained by contacting Sandra Leggo at sleggo@globetrotter.net .

    1. Upcoming dates to remember:

Diocesan Synod will be held from Wednesday, October 17 to Saturday, October 20. Synod will begin with an opening service at St. Lukes Cathedral on Wednesday evening, and will conclude at noon on Saturday.

The Annual Lay Readers Conference will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday, October 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This session has been designed to fit in with the Synod, and will end in time to have dinner and robe for the service that evening.

    2. There has been some confusion about Diocesan Policy regarding reporting of property matters. The Executive Committee of November 2001 passed the following motion: "That Property Matters Request Forms must be submitted to the Synod Office; and that items which can be approved by the Deanery Officials need not be presented to the Executive Committee. Projects involving expenditures of $25,000 or over, structural changes or diocesan assistance must be brought to the Executive Committee."

Please note that a reporting process to Deanery Officials is required, even for items under $25,000 and even if funds are on hand. Further, if a project involves structural change or a request for a Diocesan grant, it must come before Executive, regardless of the cost.

    3. As part of their mission to provide pastoral and sacramental ministry to those living in isolated communities in Canada's north, the Council of the North has developed educational materials for use in local parishes. The first of these materials is a place mat. It has a map of Canada on the front, with an outline of the geography of the Council of the North. The reverse provides more information and some games to play that share in a fun way facts and concerns of the Council. The place mat could be used in parish or other gatherings to educate all ages on the mission and ministry of the Council of the North. For information on ordering placemats, please contact Fiona Brownlee at fbrownlee@gokenora.com .

    January 30, 2007
