Emmaus Anglican Church, Sault Ste. Marie

​​​​​​​The Archbishop of Algoma is seeking to appoint an Incumbent for Emmaus Anglican Church, Sault Ste. Marie. It is a full-time position and includes a housing allowance.

In September 2016, after much prayer and discussion, the parishes of St. John the Evangelist and St. Matthew’s in Sault Ste. Marie merged to form a new parish, Emmaus, on the site of the former St. Matthew’s.  They believe God has called them to be a gathered community that:

  • Is patterned by the gospel narrative
  • Tells a new story in the city
  • Is committed to discipleship
  • Is inspired by a robust hope
  • Exists for the sake of others

The congregation would welcome a new Incumbent who feels called to their midst and who is supportive of the mission and vision of Emmaus as they grow in their journey of faith together.  They are hoping for an individual who is energetic, young at heart, open-minded, and willing to be involved in the many community building and missional ventures the parish is involved with as their ongoing ministry in God’s world.

Emmaus is in the beautiful border town of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on the north shore of the St. Mary’s River, which separates Lake Huron and Lake Superior.  The small city of 73,000 is truly “naturally gifted” and is noted as Algoma’s Friendliest City.  It is a virtual paradise for people who enjoy outdoor activities in all four seasons.  It is home to excellent post-secondary facilities and offers a variety of educational options at the elementary and secondary school levels.  There is no lack of cultural opportunities and exposure in the city.  Sault Ste. Marie is home to the Algoma Conservatory (second largest conservatory in Ontario), Sault Symphony, Art Gallery of Algoma, and a variety of theatre groups to just name a few.

Muskoka Deanery Youth Ministry Animator

General Description:

The Muskoka Deanery Youth Ministry Animator will work with all Anglican parishes in the Muskoka area to both support and directly provide ministry to and with teenagers and young adults. The overall mission is to make disciples, and this will necessitate helping young people to put down deep roots both in faith and in faith communities so that the seeds planted may have the best chance of weathering life transitions (aging out of Sunday School, and moving on to university, family life and/or careers).

The vision is one of “coming alongside” others who are, or want to be, involved in youth ministry, but not to do it all or become permanently involved with any particular group (with the possible exception of a deanery-wide group).

Priority Areas:

The following five key tasks will take up much of the allotted working hours:

  1. The Animator will prioritize organizing and inviting people of all ages to a youth ministry “rally day” in 2018 – perhaps in September – the purpose of which is to introduce the generations to one another, to have a fun day, to brainstorm/dream, to learn, and to worship together. This event is the main goal and priority for the first year of employment.

Other tasks, when possible and in whatever order:

  1. Visit parish groups (Parish Council/Advisory Board, Outreach Committees etc.) to consult, offer support, and identify youth ministry needs and growing edges (the Animator may initiate these visits);
  2. The Animator will lay the ground work in designing an annual youth retreat (both content and organizing steps) for all youth in the Deanery (envisioned as a two-night weekend retreat). This should be able to be implemented by the Animator or by others;
  3. The Animator will provide support to, and ensure communication with, Muskoka’s delegates to both Youth Synod and Diocesan Synod;
  4. The Animator will offer training and mentoring to individuals and groups throughout the Deanery when requested, and take steps toward offering one Deanery-wide training event per year (nature of training to be determined by identified needs discerned through parish visits).

Reporting Structure:

  • The employer for this position is the Incorporated Synod of the Diocese of Algoma. The Bishop, as President of the Incorporated Synod, is the senior employment manager.
  • The Archdeacon of Muskoka will serve as the Youth Ministry Animator’s immediate supervisor in matters relating to employment, representing the Bishop in these matters.
  • The Diocesan Congregational Development Officer will serve as the employee’s immediate supervisor in matters relating to faith formation and discipleship within a broadly Anglican ethos, as well as for the employee’s own continuing education and support.
  • A written report must be submitted to the Deanery Council (via the Regional Dean) at each meeting (usually three times a year) and the Animator should expect questions from that body.
  • When working with individual parishes or congregations, the Incumbent must be apprised and supportive of the Animator’s work (including program content) for any projects to continue.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Priority will be given to a candidate who has had some training in youth ministry.
  • Although the candidate need not be an Anglican, she or he should have a respect for Anglicanism and be open to the particular gifts of our denomination. (We want to offer an alternative to other youth programs already operating in the area).
  • A personal, lively faith will sustain the candidate in their work and inspire young people to explore Christian discipleship.

Screening in Faith: Any offer of employment is conditional upon receipt of three references and a criminal records check.

The remuneration for this part-time position is $14,902.00 per annum, less appropriate deductions required by law. This amount represents twenty hours per week. Two weeks of paid holidays, pro-rated in accordance with the part-time hours and the one year term of the position, are provided and must be taken before the conclusion of the term.

There is a travel allowance of 46 cents per kilometer that may be claimed through the Diocesan Treasurer. It will be necessary, as much as possible, to cluster out-of-town travel to best use our resources. Travel beyond deanery boundaries must be authorized by the Bishop or her appointees. As approved by the Diocesan Treasurer, we will reimburse all reasonable costs and expenses incurred in the course of the job including such things as office supplies, long distance calls, photocopying, faxing, and up to $10 per month for your home email account.
