THE BASIC CONCEPT OF ST. LUKE’S CATHEDRAL COLUMBARIUM

·       To  provide a place for departed loved ones on the grounds of the Cathedral capturing in a new way the notion of the churchyard cemetery.

·        To provide a facility to inter ashes in an appropriate manner and at modest cost

·        To provide another way to minister to grieving people.

·       To establish a policy of inclusivity which would respond to anyone who might wish to place here the ashes of loved ones regardless of religious belief or background.

·     That the Columbarium would provide a source of revenue for the Cathedral that would establish an investment fund to; maintain the Cathedral fabric, establish long-term care for people in grief, and provide for outreach ministries.

·        The Columbarium was designed in such a way that it serves a second purpose in addition to being a place to inter ashes but also become an island of peace for reflection and meditation not only for those who may come to remember departed loved ones but also any sojourner in search of a place to reflect and pray.  Creative work has been done to incorporate the thematic elements of earth and water in the design which serves to enhance this reflective purpose. We understand the concept to be one tangible and significant way in which we respond to our mission statement call that we live out the love of Christ in service to others.

A Place to Remember in the Heart of the City

Following the tradition burial in a parish churchyard, the Columbarium provides an area of peace and tranquillity in the centre of Sault Ste. Marie.  The Cathedral will ensure that the ashes of your loved ones will be kept secure in perpetuity.  The Columbarium is open year-round and you can visit the Columbarium any time, day or night.  Clergy are available should you need pastoral care.

Arrangements for the purchase of interment rights for a Columbarium niche can be made by an individual before death, or by the family of the deceased following the death.  Application can be made to the Manager of the Columbarium via the Cathedral Office for an appointment to complete and sign the appropriate documents and make the selection of a niche.  At the appointed time, the appropriate Cathedral official can assist the family with final arrangements for the interment.

Inquiries can be made through the Cathedral Parish Office – 705-254-7144 or stlukescathedral@bellnet.ca
