Canon J-2:CHURCH BOARDS

church board:

1. a) There shall be a church board in each parish.

b) In parishes with more than one congregation, there may be one board for the parish and/or one for each congregation.

duties:

2. The board shall help manage the spiritual and temporal affairs of the congregation, assist the churchwardens in carrying out their duties, and implement policies and decisions of the congregation's vestry meetings, the synod, and the Bishop.

name of the board:

3. The vestry shall choose the name of the board.

membership:

4. The board shall consist of:

a) the incumbent or interim;

b) the churchwardens and deputy churchwardens;

c) the lay delegate(s) to synod;

d) the treasurer, if appointed;

and may also include:

e) the alternate delegate(s) to synod;

f) the vestry clerk;

g) members at large;

h) youth member, aged 16-24 years;

i) representatives of any committees or groups;

j) other clergy connected with the parish.

chair and secretary:

5. The board shall elect a chair and secretary at the first meeting following the annual vestry meeting.

vacancy on the board:

6: (a) In the event of the resignation of a warden, the proper deputy warden, if there is one, shall assume the position without further appointment or election.

(b) When a warden has missed three consecutive meetings of the board, the board may pass a resolution declaring the position vacant, whereupon in the absence of a deputy,

(i) in the case of a people’s warden, the vestry shall be called to elect a replacement; and

(ii) in the case of an incumbent’s warden, the incumbent shall appoint a replacement. (Added 1997).
