Ministry Description:

Youth Synod Health Care Provider

(Could be adapted for health care providers at other youth camp situations)

Participant Group

Participants coming to the Youth Synod health care provider for health related needs are teenagers (as young as 13) and adults. A maximum of 75 people may require assistance.

Length of Ministry Appointment

Appointed year-to-year, the health care provider is on duty during Youth Synod (4 days, over the August long weekend) and will be in-touch with the Youth Synod director as needed before and after camp.

Goals of This Ministry

To promote health and safety at Youth Synod;

To provide appropriate health care when necessary.

Responsibilities and Tasks

Keep and dispense ALL medications which are noted on Youth Synod participant registration forms;

Be available and accessible throughout Youth Synod should any emergencies arise;

Give a brief talk at the beginning of Youth Synod outlining health and safety rules (as outlined in the General Camp Manitou rules and any others the nurse may deem helpful);

Refer to outside agencies or treatment facilities as needed;

Be a "safe person" participants can talk to about concerns including, but not limited to: homesickness, bedwetting, depression, etc..

Store any money or food that participants bring to camp (campers are instructed to not bring unnecessary food, i.e. junk food).

Qualifications

The Youth Synod health care provider must be a Registered Nurse;

Some experience relating to teenagers is extremely helpful.

Personal Characteristics

Because Youth Synod ministers to teenagers, the health care provider should enjoy being with young people...and be difficult to offend, but easily amused!

The health care provider must be able to maintain and promote a calm attitude in the event of any emergency;

Demonstrate genuine care and concern for the well being of all Youth Synod participants.

Support and Supervision

The Youth Synod health care provider works as part of a larger team of adult leaders to make Youth Synod as positive an experience as possible for all participants. As such, concerns (that are not confidential) can and should be shared as needed with the Youth Synod director, adult cabin leaders etc..

Mandatory Activities

Maintain written record of any treatment and pass on such records to next Youth Synod health care provider (by law, health care records must be kept for ten years);

Throughout Youth Synod, the health care provider must post a note on infirmiry door stating his/her location in camp.

Working Conditions

The Youth Synod health care provider sleeps in or next door to the infirmiry, located in the main lodge of Camp Manitou;

Non-smoking environment.

Benefits to the Volunteer

The Youth Synod health care provider is a very necessary and appreciated person! It is hoped that this will be an opportunity to make friends and enjoy the beauty of Camp Manitou while seeing tangible results of exercising this practical ministry.

Screening Measures

As with all adult positions at Youth Synod where direct contact with youth is likely, the health care provider must obtain a police records check;

References must be provided upon request;

The Health Care Provider is accountable to the Youth Synod Camp Director.
