The Parish Screening
& Program Management Kit

May 27th, 2002

Dear Friends in Christ,

This package contains guidelines designed to help congregations implement the Screening in Faith program introduced at Synod 2001. Delegates to Synod charged the Executive Committee with the development of a "Diocesan Accountability Framework" to ensure this program’s growth. The Screening in Faith workbook is a necessary companion resource to this kit.

Enclosed you will find some resources which we hope will make your task a little easier:

Screening Guidelines For Congregations;

10 Suggested Steps for Implementation of Screening in Faith;

Guidelines For Working With Vulnerable Persons;

Guidelines For the Creation and Security of Confidential Files;

"How to Get Help" – Resource List and Training Opportunities.

At the April 2002 meeting of the Executive Committee, a motion to make screening a Canonical requirement was passed: "That the Executive Committee approve the development of a mandatory screening policy and related Canons for presentation at Synod 2003."

As the title of this kit suggests, screening is about more than "checking people out" before assigning them to a volunteer or paid ministry. Supervision and follow-up (program management) are equally important. Taken together, screening and on-going management of programs can lead to safer church activities and more satisfied volunteers.

If you have any questions about these resources please call. We are all on a learning curve together, but as in all things – we will do our best with God’s help!

Sincerely in Christ,

Program and Youth Consultant
