VOLUNTEER MINISTRY JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Reader
The job of the reader is to offer the weekly scripture passages to the worshipping community in a manner that is engaging, educational and accessible.
Outline of Responsibilities
· to be aware of the readers schedule and find a replacement if you are unavailable
· to read over the passages before the service either at home (verses are listed in the newsletter) or arrive early so that you are comfortable with the context as well as the reading
· pick up readers sheets from the greeters table
· check to ensure that the passage is correct
· move the lectern microphone so that you will be speaking comfortably into it
· make eye contact with the sound technician to ensure he/she knows you are ready to speak and that the microphone is on
· speak slowly, clearly and treat the reading as a story with character and inflection
· read the context first, then pause before you continue
· pause after the reading and before the closing response
Skills & Experience
· comfortable reading in front of people
· an interest in engaging people in what you are reading and not having scripture be monotonous
· readers are to use the assigned printed sheets which are taken from the NRSV and are to begin with the prepared context
Support, Supervision & Training
· the worship committee and the Rector
· a willingness to attend training sessions offered by the worship committee
· the worshipping community

· none
Length of Term
· as desired by the individual in consultation with the Rector or Volunteer Coordinators
· the personal satisfaction of making scripture more accessible
· knowing you have contributed t the community’s meaningful engagement with the worship service
