Bishop announces upcoming installation of canon

Posted: Jan 24, 2018

Bishop Anne Germond is pleased to announce her intention to install the Rev. Barbara Graham as a Canon of St. Luke’s Cathedral during the opening service of the 2018 Clergy/Lay Pastor Conference on May 7th at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral.

Barbara grew up in Coventry, England.  At age 26 (1955) she moved to Canada after becoming a registered nurse.  She met her husband, the late Archdeacon William Andrew Graham, at St. John’s Cathedral in Saskatoon, while singing in the choir.  They were married in Pangnirtung on Baffin Island (Nunavut) on October 2, 1957.   Two of their sons were born there with the third being born in England.

The couple spent 18 years in total living in the Anglican Diocese of the Arctic with William working as a priest and Barbara by his side. In 1975, they moved to Milford Bay.

Barbara retired from nursing in 1988.  William died in the early 90’s but Barbara’s devotion to the church and to helping others did not waver.  She completed an Associate Diploma in Theology and attained a Bachelor of Theology degree from Thorneloe University.  She completed her Master of Theological Studies from Trinity College in 2013.

In 1999, she started holding weekly bible studies with Inuit inmates at the Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst.  Her knowledge of the language was very helpful in this regard.  Recognizing her work in this area, she was ordained a Deacon in February 2004 by Bishop Ron Ferris.

Rev. Barbara was ordained a priest in 2015, at the age of eighty-six, by Bishop Stephen Andrews.

Barbara has also provided pastoral support at the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital and James Street Place in Bracebridge.  She is the Muskoka Deanery Warden of Lay Readers and Associate Priest at St. Thomas’, Bracebridge.  She has been a member of several committees of the Diocese and currently is part of the Committee on Drug and Alcohol Addiction – Mission Outreach and Education.

Even as the years progress and health challenges present, Barbara is ready to help in any way she is able.  She is a true servant of the Lord with a heart and soul for ministry to God’s people.
