Preparations for Annual Vestries

Posted: Jan 17, 2018

Dear Good People of Algoma,

Are any of you called to write a report for your vestry or annual report?  Do you plan to attend vestry?

If yes, then this information is for you.

At our 2017 Diocesan Synod, our Canon J-1: Vestries was updated to include a missional focus.

There are new requirements for the writing of individual reports and for the agenda of annual vestries.

I invite you to please refer to Canon J-1 that is available through the diocesan website.  Please go to governance on the side menu in the blue box, and then click on Canons.

The vestry agenda needs to include:

  • Review of Missional Objectives and Outcomes for 2017

This agenda item is listed in 5.b.vi. (annual vestry meetings)

  • Overview of Missional Objectives and Outcomes for 2018 (5.b.xv)

Individual parish reports need to include 2 new sections:

  • Summarize the aspirations, activities, and outcomes of 2017 and
  • Objectives and anticipated outcomes for 2018

If you have already completed your reports, well done!  Keep these canonical changes in mind for next year and include in your vestry meeting your objectives and anticipated outcomes for 2018. The vestry will be able to do the review of Missional Objectives and Outcomes for 2017, and the Overview of Missional Objectives and Outcomes for 2018.  The 2018 operating budget should be derived from the missional objectives set for 2018.

With his permission, I am attaching a report from St. Paul’s for our Christmas presentation of A Christmas Carol. I think the author, Daniel Klein, did a good job incorporating the new requirements into his report.

Please email me (stpauls.rector@shaw.ca) or call me (1-807-624-7161) if you have any questions.  I would be happy to help, however I can.

Wishing you blessings on your reports for vestry,

Deborah
