The following two motions were passed at Synod 2017:

1a)That the Diocese of Algoma encourage parishes and Incumbents to become familiar with Bill C-14 and this new approach to end of life care and develop a plan of pastoral response to those affected by serious, incurable illness and their families within our communities;

1b)That the Diocese of Algoma look into providing opportunities and resources for training of clergy and laity in end of life pastoral care.

and

That the Diocese of Algoma consider Drug and Alcohol Addiction an area of missional action and encourage parishes within the Diocese to engage in discussions and training of clergy and laity volunteers in providing pastoral care to individuals and families affected by addictions and drug and alcohol abuse and to call upon parishes to support preventative drug education at the parish and community level.

It was determined that two committees would be established to discuss methods/processes to move these initiatives forward across the Diocese:  1)Committee for Medically Assisted Dying and 2)Committee for Drug and Alcohol Addiction - Mission Outreach and Education.

We have some volunteers for these committees prepared to commence the work but wanted to canvass the Diocese to ascertain if others would like to join either committee before initial teleconferences are arranged.

If you feel you would be available to support either of these committees in their work, please contact Liz Hamel, Administrative Assistant at adminassistant@dioceseofalgoma.com or via telephone at 705-256-5061 (Ext. 27) to identify yourself and provide contact information.

Thank you for prayerfully considering your involvement in these Diocesan-wide initiatives.
