The Reverend Dr John Sandys-Wunsch (1936-2015)

Posted: Sep 30, 2015

We are saddened to learn of the death of The Rev. Dr John William Kervyn Sandys-Wunsch in Victoria, B.C. on Tuesday, 29 September 2015. A native Saulite, John Sandys-Wunsch was a graduate of UBC and went on to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Receiving his DPhil in 1961, he did postgraduate work at Strasbourg and Tübingen.

Deaconed in 1961 and priested the following year, Dr Sandys-Wunsch served parishes in Courtenay, BC, the West Coast Mission, and was an assistant in St John’s, Victoria. In 1966, he became a lecturer in Queen’s College, in St John’s, Newfoundland, but then he came to Algoma in 1982 to take up the post of Provost of Thorneloe University College. He was an honorary associate at Church of the Epiphany, and served churches in Capreol and Garson. In 1991 he left Thorneloe and returned to British Columbia where he became a research fellow at the University of Victoria and an associate fellow of the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society.

A prolific author, he had an incisive wit that gave even his academic essays an anecdotal quality. His most recent book, What Have They Done to the Bible? A History of Modern Biblical Interpretation (2005), reflects his interest in the development of ideas and how this development shaped the way the Bible has been read.

We extend our sympathies to his wife, Sheila. He was 79.
