Mane Mission

Posted: Apr 1, 2015

Inspired by news reports that North Korean supreme leader, Kim Jong-un, had issued a decree that male students must get a haircut like his own, Bishop Andrews is requesting that all male clergy adopt a hair style similar to his (‘number three on the sides, and then about an inch-and-a-half on the top’).

When asked why he was instituting this new policy, the bishop replied, ‘We have a saying in the church that the clergy are exercising “the bishop’s ministry”. What better way to indicate this than the visual reminder that they have haircuts like mine?’

Bishop Andrews said that the uniformity would enhance collegiality in the diocese, and suggested that sporting the coiffeur could spark conversation and be an opportunity for evangelism. ‘In the Medieval church,’ he explained, ‘monks wore a hair style known as a “tonsure”, and it identified them as belonging to a particular religious order.’ When asked who would likely ask his clergy about their hair styles, bishop Andrews replied, ‘Well, their hairdresser, for one.’

Fearful of people drawing too close a comparison with the North Korean potentate, Bishop Andrews clarified that, although he has an uncle who is deceased, ‘he died of natural causes’.
