Death of Dean Allan Reed

Posted: Oct 21, 2013

We were sorry to receive word about the death of The Very Reverend Allan Reed.  He died suddenly on Sunday morning, 20 October 2013, at home. In 2004, Dorothy Bowers wrote a brief history of St Luke's Cathedral and recorded this about Allan:

On St Luke’s Day, October 18, 1993, Allan Reed was installed as the seventh Dean of Algoma.  A graduate of the University of Manitoba and Huron College, Allan was ordained in 1969 by Bishop Barry Valentine.  Dean Reed and his family moved to Algoma from the Diocese of Rupert’s Land.  During his early days at St Luke’s, the Diocese was in the process of electing a new bishop, and Dean Reed was called upon to serve in supportive roles and provide resource responsibilities to the Diocese, which, along with his duties within the parish, made for an initiation characterized by considerable challenge.  Dean Reed’s initiative in providing a columbarium in the confines of the Cathedral property was realized with the turning of the sod in 2000 and the completion of the first phase in 2001.  Dean Reed introduced a number of innovative programmes to the Cathedral, and his vision of making St Luke’s an integral part of the community for people of all faiths saw such programmes as the annual Hymn Sing and the presentation of a Requiem for All Saints’ Day, became a tradition at the Cathedral.

In July, 2001, Dean Reed moved to Kelowna, B.C., to become the Dean of Kootenay and Incumbent of the Cathedral Church of St Michael & All Angels.  Memorial arrangements are pending.  We commend his wife, Noreen, children Andrew, Philip and Gillian, and brothers David and Lloyd to your prayers.
