Bishop announces planned Ordination and Installation of Canons

Posted: Apr 4, 2011

Bishop Andrews is pleased to announce that the Opening Service of the upcoming 45th Synod of the Diocese of Algoma will feature an Ordination to the Priesthood and the Installation of three new Canons.

God willing, The Rev. Roberta Wilson-Garrett will be ordained as a Priest. Roberta has been the Incumbent of St Saviour’s, Blind River, and Church of the Redeemer, Thessalon since 2009. She was made Deacon 11 April 2010. She recently received her Bachelor in Theology Degree from Thorneloe University, and holds a Mental Retardation Counselling Diploma. Prior to 2009, she was a Case Manager with the Algoma District Services Administration Board.

The Rev’s Murray Tipping and Genny Rollins will be installed as Canons of St Luke’s Cathedral, along with Dr David Gould, who will be installed as a Lay Canon.

The Rev. Murray Tipping, an LTh graduate of Huron College, was ordained by Archbishop Wright and served a curacy at St Luke’s Cathedral. In 1957 he established the Parish of Christ Church in North Bay before serving with the Canadian Army in 1963. Subsequently transferring to the Diocese of Montreal, Murray returned to North Bay and, in 1998, was made an Honorary Assistant at the church he had founded.

The Rev. Genny Rollins has an ATh from Thorneloe and a BA from Laurentian. She was made Deacon in 1989 and was priested the following year. She was the Assistant Curate at the Church of the Ascension in Sudbury before becoming the Priest in Charge at All Saints, Coniston. She holds the Thorneloe Mitre Award for her compassionate work as Chaplain at the City of Sudbury Jail.

A long-time parishioner at St Luke’s Cathedral, cardiologist Dr David Gould has served the Church in a variety of diocesan and national capacities. He has been a participant in every General Synod since 1965, except one. He was a member of the Council of General Synod and the national church’s Faith, Worship and Ministry Committees that produced the Book of Alternative Services and Supplementary Eucharistic Prayers. He is the diocesan Warden of Lay Readers and has written a widely used pamphlet, ‘Eucharistic practice and the risk of infection’.

The Opening Synod Service will be held at St Luke’s Cathedral, Sault Ste Marie, on Wednesday, 4 May, at 7:30 p.m. It is the Feast of St Monnica. The preacher will be The Rev. Dr Jay Koyle.
