While most parishes have limited budgets for advertsing, it is often possible to get
free media coverage with a little focused effort. News agencies have fewer reporters and
they are often looking to use appropriate news items that have been submitted. Interesting
and tightly worded one-page news releases are likely to get attention. Here are some
suggestions.
1) Keep your item brief and pack in the facts.
2) Give the location of the church or contact information for the activities being
promoted.
3) Look for an interesting angle or a twist that will capture the interest of the
editor and the reader.
4) For print media add a photo and hand-deliver it so that it stays timely.
5) Editors are in need of seasonal articles.
6) Put the "gist" in the first paragraph with further details following.
7) Keep a list of fax numbers for the radio stations, tv stations, and print media in
your immediate area. Your news release can then be fired off effortlessly to the five or
six outlets that would likely be most interested.
8) The "Algoma Anglican" is also interested in receiving parish and deanery
news items.
